Barry Kitcher's life in Australian ballet spanned an era which saw the development of public enthusiasm and support for the art form in Australia by the Borovansky Ballet, then the formation of The Australian Ballet and the early years of the national company's successes. In 1964 he created the pivotal role of the Lyrebird in Sir Robert Helpmann's 'The Display' which left him a legacy of enduring recognition in the history of Australian ballet.
