KEMPE, Margery - The Book of Margery Kempe
Covered with adhesive plastic. Translation and introduction by Barry Windeatt. 1994 reprint with new bibliography. In her book, Margery Kempe (c. 1373 to c. 1440 ) has bequeathed the earliest known autobiography of an English person and one of the most engaging of Christian Lives. Here she describes in homely detail the madness that followed the birth of her first child, the failure of her brewery business in Kings Lynn, her conversion and - the bulk and purpose of her book - her lifes journey towards God. The story of difficulties with her husband, lone pilgrimages abroad, uncontrollable tears, meditation and visions is remarkable and touching less as a work of mysticism (since Marjerys conversations with the Lord are usually related with endearing, earthbound awkwardness) but as a portrait of the world of a mediaeval woman, and a record of human faith.
